Breast ultrasound is like a stethoscope for the Breast Surgeon. It allows interpretation of an area of concern using sound waves. There is no discomfort. Ideally the surgeon scans the breast himself or herself instead of a technician. This provides real-time interpretation of the breast tissue, lending the most accurate reading.
Ultrasound can distinguish solid and cystic (fluid filled) masses or complex masses. It can also discern dilated milk ducts, lymph nodes, prominent fibroglandular tissue, skin thickening and more.

Ultrasound can also be used to aspirate (drain) cysts or sample (biopsy) solid masses for diagnosis. More experimentally, ultrasound is being utilized by a few to treat benign masses e.g. fibroadenoma by either freezing them with cryotherapy or desiccating them with radiofrequency (a heating technique that "melts" the mass). |
